Camera Obscura, Camera Lucida: Essays in Honor of Annette Michelson

Annette Michelson’s contributions to art and film criticism over the last three decades have been unparalleled. This volume honors her unique legacy with original essays by some of the many scholars who have been influenced by her work. Some continue her efforts to develop theoretical frameworks for understanding modernist art, while others practice her form of interdisciplinary criticism in relation to avant-garde and modernist art works and artists. Still others investigate and evaluate Michelson’s work itself. All in some way pay homage to her extraordinary contribution.

Pearl Harbor: The Day of Infamy An Illustrated History

This definitive, illustrated history re-creates for a new generation the two hour attack at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, that left more than twenty-three hundred men dead, eight battleships sunk or damaged, and the United States at war. Dan van der Vat's compelling narrative contains new revelations based on groundbreaking research and is illuminated by a wealth of rare archival images-including previously unpublished personal photos and memorabilia. Evocative paintings by marine artist Tom Freeman, maps and dimensional diagrams of the battle, and contemporary color photography set the stage for the moving first-person accounts of eyewitnesses and survivors.

Mao Zedong and China s Revolutions: A Brief History with Documents

Whether one views Mao Zedong as a hero or a demon, the "Great Helmsman" was undoubtedly a pivotal figure in the history of 20th-century China. The first part of this volume is an introductory essay that traces the history of 20th-century China, from Mao's early career up to the Chinese Communist Party's victory in 1949, through three decades of revolution, to Mao's death I 1976. The second half offers a selection of Mao's writings—including such seminal pieces as "On the New Democracy" and selections from the "Little Red Book"—and writings about Mao and his legacy by both his contemporaries and modern scholars. Also included are headnotes, a chronology, Questions for Consideration, photographs, a selected bibliography, and index.

Harvest Of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivation and the Terror Famine

Harvest Of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivation and the Terror Famine

Harvest Of Sorrow: Soviet Collectivation and the Terror Famine

Between 1929 and 1932 the Soviet Communist Party struck a double blow at the peasantry of the USSR: dekulakisation, the dispossession and deportation of millions of peasant families; and collectivisation, the effective abolition of private property in land and the concentration of the remaining peasantry in 'collective' farms under Party control.

There followed a 'terror-famine', inflicted on the collectivised peasants of the Ukraine and certain other regions by the state, which set impossibly high quotas, removed every other source of food, and prevented outside help - even from other areas of the USSR - from reaching the starving millions. More deaths resulted from the actions described in this book that the total number of deaths from all the countries in the First World War.

Epic in scope and rich in detail, The Harvest of Sorrow tells the moving story of a disaster that was, in human terms, one of the worst in living memory.

Illumination Night

Illumination Night

Illumination Night

Vonny lives on the island of Martha's Vineyard with her husband Andre and son Simon. Their neighbour Elizabeth, a woman in her seventies, falls from an upstairs window and her granddaughter Jody is summoned to nurse her through her convalescence.

The scene is set for a magical story of love and loneliness, of terror and human frailty, of the mystery and grace of ordinary experience. Alice Hoffman's ability to fuse the domestic and the mythic in a narrative of such gentle yet magnetic force confirms her stature as one of the most gifted of American novelists.

The Rants, Raves and Thoughts of Mao Zedong: The Dictator in His Own Words and Those of Others

The Rants, Raves and Thoughts of Mao Zedong: The Dictator in His Own Words and Those of Others

The Rants, Raves and Thoughts of Mao Zedong: The Dictator in His Own Words and Those of Others

The Rants, Raves and Thoughts series examines the speeches and writings of a variety of the world's high-profile totalitarian dictators and terrorist leaders, in a highly unusual and original way. The books also feature political jokes by their contemporaries, both friends and enemies, and the dictator's own opinions of other world leaders. The goals and inspiration of these books is to seek to explain what makes dictators and terrorists so ruthless, in their own words and in the words of others. To let these evidently psychotic people reveal who they are, what they believe and what they hope to achieve and to strike a blow for the freedom to say and publish what we want about them.

The Arcades Project

The Arcades Project

The Arcades Project

"To great writers," Walter Benjamin once wrote, "finished works weigh lighter than those fragments on which they labor their entire lives." Conceived in Paris in 1927 and still in progress when Benjamin fled the Occupation in 1940, "The Arcades Project" (in German, "Das Passagen-Werk") is a monumental ruin, meticulously constructed over the course of thirteen years--"the theater," as Benjamin called it, "of all my struggles and all my ideas."

Focusing on the arcades of nineteenth-century Paris-glass-roofed rows of shops that were early centers of consumerism--Benjamin presents a montage of quotations from, and reflections on, hundreds of published sources, arranging them in thirty-six categories with descriptive rubrics such as "Fashion," "Boredom," "Dream City," "Photography," "Catacombs," "Advertising," "Prostitution," "Baudelaire," and "Theory of Progress." His central preoccupation is what he calls the commodification of things--a process in which he locates the decisive shift to the modern age.

"The Arcades Project" is Benjamin's effort to represent and to critique the bourgeois experience of nineteenth-century history, and, in so doing, to liberate the suppressed "true history" that underlay the ideological mask. In the bustling, cluttered arcades, street and interior merge and historical time is broken up into kaleidoscopic distractions and displays of ephemera. Here, at a distance from what is normally meant by "progress," Benjamin finds the lost time(s) embedded in the spaces of things.
